British occupation

The modern history of Hong Kong probably starts during the period of British occupation when small scale  industries were set up throughout the territory. The rise of multi-story buildings was initiated under the  administration of Gov. Alexander Grantham. The textile industry was a major factor behind the boom times of the economy of Hong Kong. However, the increased focus on more work and cheap labor may have  affected traditional Chinese values.

Handover to Communist China

The handover to Communist China marked one of the most important points in the modern history of Hong Kong since Hong Kong residents viewed this event with mixed feelings. In some quarters, the reunification with Communist China was viewed positively. But others would have preferred to remain under British  occupation instead. The handover to Communist China occurred in July 1, 1997 with Chris Patten being the last British governor of Hong Kong prior to the handover.
